If you ask anyone what they think of Agnes, they’ll tell you she is quiet and hardworking, never taking credit for herself but always praising her fellow managers and teams of staff for their hard work. If you ask Agnes what she thinks of herself, she’ll say that as a Bible study leader and cafe manager, she tries to set an example for her staff to follow. She also appreciates the support she gets from the executive directors at Elephante. “I feel valued as an employee,” she says. “Other bosses can talk down to you and assume you are dumb, but our bosses here take feedback and listen well.” The hope and happiness at Elephante inspire her and so does the Commons’ potential: there is more event space, hotel rooms, catering options, and programs and partnership opportunities than at the old location, where she worked as Head Chef.
Looking forward, Agnes is excited for the possibility of job creation, not just at the Commons, but with the community-based organisations who want to partner with Elephante. The thought of what the space could be used for makes her very proud!
